Travel Singapore to Bintan

I recently made another trip Riau Island, Bintan. This eventually my 3rd time been to Bintan for holiday and other purposes. If you ever seen my post previously about travel to Batam, the ferry terminal you should take to Bintan is Tanah Merah ferry terminal, not Harbourfront Terminal. There are not many things in this terminal as there are only about 2 eateries located at near entry gate and exit gate.

You may find many resorts in Bintan and there are resorts just few minutes away from the ferry terminal in Bintan (Bandar Bentan Telani Terminal). Apparently the resort I chosen is Bintan Agro Resort which take another 45 mins - 1 hour to reach there. The resort provided pick-up transportation from ferry terminal, so please check with the resort and make the arrangement.

Bintan resort ferry cost me $66 for return ticket. Yeah...it is more expensive than ferry to Batam since Bintan resort became tourist attraction for many people who stay in Singapore, either for family holiday or just play a golf there. You may not be surprised to see all the charges rate is based on Singapore dollar.

How to get to Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal
1. Go to Bedok Int / Tanah Merah MRT Stn
2. Take SBS bus no: 35
3. Alight at last point at Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal

How to get to Bintan Agro Resort
1. Get to Bandar Bentan Telani ferry terminal
2. Land transportation arranged with resort and it will take another 45 min -1 hour

Singapore to Batam - Batam Center

I had posted previously, travel from Singapore to Batam (Harbour Bay). And this time, I'm going to post another 'series' of travel to Batam which will arrive at Batam Center. Probably this the most frequent for people travel to/from Batam - Singapore.

There are 2 operators running the ferry to Batam Center: Batam Fast and Penguin. This time I took Batam Fast which cost me $40+$7 for return ticket. The reason I put $40 + $7 is because you will pay $40 in Singapore and $7 in Batam. You may also make advance booking for the ferry back from Batam - Singapore when you arrived at Batam Center, this is to ensure you will have a seat at timing you prefer for going back.

Once you arrived at Batam Center you may heading to Mega Mall Batam via connection bridge at level 2. If you decided to go straight to Hotel, there is a taxi waiting just outside the Batam Center. I strongly suggest for car rental for touring in Batam. The car rental with driver will be much cheaper compare to Taxi and easy to go anywhere at your own.

1 day trip itinerary
1. Balerang bridge - current popular attraction in Batam that connected about 6 islands. Along the journey you may find few beaches.
2. Old Vietnamese refugee camp or the biggest temple in South Asia "Vihara Duta Maitreya"
3. Kelong (fresh live) Seafood and dragon fruit farm near at Balareng bridge-3 *Please be aware of hygiene issue due to flies around when food served
4. Shopping at Malls (eq: Nagoya Hill)
5. Massage

Things to note:
1. Main Languange: Bahasa Indonesia. English is widely spoken for any tourist places or related such hotel, restaurant, or taxi driver.
2. Timing is GMT +7 (1 hour behind Singapore Time). 8pm in Singapore is 7pm in Batam
3. Public transport not well developed as Singapore, so convenient transport will be taxi or car rental
4. Curreny 1 SGD = around Rp 6800,00 (07/05/2011)

How to rent a car in Batam
1. Talk with Hotel staff to get a car rental
2. Anton: +62812-701-4074
3. http://batamrentcar.com/
and so on...you may google to find out more. Please note point no2 i got it from other blog who used them and no3 from Google. I'll suggest to ask price for no2 and no3 to compare with no1. Most of the cases rental from hotel is higher than outside.

Hepatitis A vaccine in Singapore

Havrix 1440 Hep-A
I was taken hepatitis A vaccine last year for 1st dose and recently for 2nd dose at Singapore Polyclinic. I find taking Hepatitis A vaccine at Polyclinic is cheaper than other places. The vaccine given was Havrix 1440 as shown on the left. Not sure if there are many types vaccines outside with different range of price. They charged me for $142 for 2 doses while other places charge a little bit more about $150-160. Please note when you decided to go polyclinic, you have to bear the waiting time that might be longer.

Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is an acute inflammation of the liver caused by infection with hepatitis A virus. Hepatitis A virus is often spread by infected stools. This means personal hygiene is very important in reducing the prevalence of the virus. In some cases, eating raw oysters, undercooked shellfish, or drinking untreated tap water can also increase the risk of infection.

Symptoms
Symptoms of hepatitis A infection include fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, sudden unintended weight loss, stomach pain on the right side under the rib cage, fever, sore muscles, and in some cases, jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes), dark-coloured urine or clay-coloured stools.

Most people recover in under 2 months, but in a few, the illness may persist up to  6 months. Some patients may experience a symptomatic relapse 2 - 3 months after the initial illness.

Treatment

Hepatitis A is a self-limiting disease. There is no specific treatment. Symptomatic treatment and rest are all that is required.

Hepatitis A vaccination could be useful also for:
  • Sewerage workers
  • Food service workers
  • Healthcare workers
  • Day-care attendees.
  • Hepatitis A & Travelers
Vaccines given in 2 doses, after the 1st dose given then followed by a booster 6 - 12 months later.
