5. They lower the call booking fees for $0.2, but there is no different since they increase the basic fare for also $0.2

Cheapest budget airlines?

Anybody have heard "budget airlines"? some people called it "low cost carrier". Yes you may heard of it or even frequently travel with those airlines. Does it really cheap? how do they make money with such lower price?

We know running an airlines industry is very expensive business. First of foremost, of course you have to get the airplanes (Boeing / Airbus). Hiring qualified pilots is second major cost. Next on the list will be fuel cost, maintenance cost, flight systems, and so on.

So if this all operating expenses, how the budget airlines can sell the price lower? the answer is "cutting airline cost". How is that possible? One major way to cut cost is to save money on the fuel cost by fuel hedging. It such a long contract with current price for a long term (months- a year). If the fuel price increase, the airline will still pay at contract price. On top of that, on very small things can help them to make up the revenue by charge separate baggage, food onboard, seat allocation, and many others. I'm not going to detail as the main purpose is to compare few budget airlines in Singapore.

                          Budget Airlines Table Comparison

Airlines AirAsia JetStar Tiger

*Insurance, seat selection, luggage selection are mostly selected by the airlines. You may need to remove them to avoid extra charges.
Hope the table can help you to identify which airlines are charge you lesser than the other. The total price may always change time to time depends on promotion they have.

The Vitamins

busy with work? do you feel "office is a jungle" as we seen advertised recently by one of the multivitamin and mineral supplement company in Singapore.
Are we really need those multivitamin and mineral supplement? based on article taken from NHG Polyclinics (Singapore) stated:

Do you know that vitamin supplements are only required if you have a restricted diet, have an illness or are on certain medications? the article will bring you series on vitamins, A-K, multivitamins, Potassium, and Zinc.

Vitamin A
Vitamin A is an antioxidant - a compound that protects your cells against the effects of free radicals. Free radicals are molecules produced when your body breaks down food, or through environmental factors such as tobacco smoke and radiation. Vitamin A also plays a role in your vision, bone growth, reproduction, cell functions and the immune system.

Vitamin A can come from plant or animal sources. Plant sources include colorful fruits and vegetable such as carrots and spinach while animal sources include liver and whole milk.

Vitamin A is an oil-soluble vitamin and excess amounts can cause side effects. You should check with your doctor first before taking them.

Vitamin B
The B vitamins comprise a list of different compounds including B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B12 and folic acid. These vitamins help your body use or make energy from the food you eat and help form red blood cells.

You can get B vitamins from fish, poultry, meat and eggs, as well as from leafy green vegetables, beans and peas. Lack of certain B vitamins can cause diseases. For example, B12 or B6 deficiencies can cause anemia. Vitamin B is also recommended if you have problem absorbing vitamins normally

Vitamin C
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that is important for good skin, bones and connective tissues. It promotes healing and helps the body absorb iron.

Vitamin C comes from fruits and vegetables. Good sources include citrus fruits, red and green peppers, tomatoes and broccoli. Some people may need extra vitamin C if they are pregnant or breastfeeding, somekers or recovering from surgery or burns.

Vitamin D
Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that helps your body maintains healthy bones and teeth because it regulates the levels of bone-building calcium and phosphorus in the body. It is best attained naturally through exposure to the sun as well as through foods such as fish liver oil, salmon, mackerel, margarine fortified with Vitamin D, egg yolks, and liver.

Vitamin D supplements are recommended for vegans who do not eat eggs or dairy products, the elderly, people who do not get much exposure in the sund, post-menopausal women with bone disease and anyone suffering from rickets, osteomalacia or osteoporosis. However, excess Vitamin D can cause side effects. You should check with your health care provider before starting on Vitamin D supplements.

Vitamin E
Vitamin E is an antioxidant, which is a compound that protects your cells from the effects of free radicals. Free radicals are produced when your body breaks down food, and are present in the environment in the form of tobacco smoke and radiation. To protect your body from the effects of free radicals and to keep your skin, heart nerves, muscles and red bloods cells healthy, it is essential to include Vitamin E in your diet. It has also been shown that Vitamin E may lower the risk of cancers and heart attacks.

Vitamin E-rich foods include vegetable oils, green leafy vegetables, asparagus, nuts, and seeds, wheat germ and whole grains. It is best to get your vitamin E from these natural sources. As Vitamin E is not soluble in water, excess Vitamin E will stand in the body and cause toxic build-up. As with Vitamin D supplements, you should check with your health care provided before taking any supplemets

Vitamin K
vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays a key role in helping blood to clot. It may also decrease the severity of osteoporosis and slow down bone loss. Vitamin K-rich foods include vegetables and legumes such as spinach, kai lan, cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, and soy beans. Meat, especially organ meat, is also high in Vitamin K. You should not need any Vitamin K supplements as a well-balanced diet provides sufficient amounts for your daily needs.

Pregnant ladies, those on blood thinning medication (such as warfarin) and those at risk of blood clotting (after stroke or hear disease) should reduce their consumption of Vitamin K-rich foods. Excessive doses of Vitamin K may be toxic for babies, especially during the late stages of pregnancy.

Calcium
Calcium is the most abundant mineral in your body, and 99 percent is stored in the bones and teeth to strengthen them. Calcium is also stored in the blood, muscles and the fluid between cells. It helps muscles and blood vessels contract and expand, to secrete hormones and enzymes, and to send messages through the nervous system.

Calcium-rich food includes dairy products and leafy, green vegetables. Growing children, teenagers and pregnant women need more calcium than young adults, while older women need plenty of calcium to prevent osteoporosis. Those who do not eat enough high calcium foods should take calcium supplements

Folic Acid
Folic acid (Vitamin B9) helps to replicated and repair DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and RNA (ribonucleic acid) in the body for healthy cell development. Consumption of folic acid helps prevent cardiovascular disease, birth defects and megaloblastic anemia – a condition that results from the inhibition of DNA synthesis in red blood cell production.

Natural sources of folic acid include green leafy vegetables, asparagus, spinach, broccoli, liver, mushroom, potato, citrus fruits and juices, legumes and wholemeal bread. Pregnant and lactating women, as well as those on long-term birth control pills, antibiotics or hormone replacement therapy are encouraged to consume folic acid. People who drink alcohol excessively, eat little fresh foods and fruit, or who suffer from psoriasis (an itchy skin disorder) can also benefit from the folic acid.

Iron
Iron enables red blood cells to carry out the essential function of transferring oxygen throughout the body. A lack of iron can cause anemia in adults, while iron deficiency in children may cause learning difficulties and stunted growth.

Iron can be easily obtained from foods such as red meat, fish, oysters and poultry. It is also present in legumes, nuts, spinach and whole grains, although this form of iron is not so well absorbed by the body. It is best to eat iron-rich foods containing Vitamin C to boost the absorption of iron. A simple way to achieve this is to have a fruit after your meal

Iron supplements are recommended for the elderly, anemic women, vegans, and vegetarians. Those suffering from blood loss from ulcers, colon cancer, hemorrhoids, heavy menstruation, or who are taking antacids for indigestion or stomach ulcers should increase their intake of iron-rich foods and/or supplements.

Multivitamins
Multivitamins contain may of the vitamins and minerals required in daily life and are one of the most convenient forms of supplemets. They are usually in the form of tablets, capsules and liquids.

Multivitamins can be valuable for people who are on restricted diet (eg. strict vegetarian diets with no eggs and dairy products), those who can't eat adequately (eg. cancer patients), those who can't absorb nutrients well (eg. patients with gastrointestinal problems) or those who need more of certain vitamins or minerals (eg. during pregnancy). A healthy individual who eats a balanced diet will not need such supplements.

There is generally no harm in taking multivitamins, but you should note that severe vitamin or mineral deficiencies are not treatable with over-the-counter formulations. Pregnant women should take care not to consume common multivitamins on their own unless these are prenatal formulations prescribed by a doctor

Potassium
Potassium is a mineral that is crucial to support your heart and muscle functions. It plays a rolre in keeping bones healthy and regulating the pH and water levels in the body. The body can usually regulate potassium levels well, but this can be affected by illnesses such as kidney disease or excessive vomiting.

Potassium-rich foods include apricots, avocados, bananas, durians, jackfruits, asparagus, bamboo shoots and celery. If you have been told by the doctor to reduce your potassium intake, you may do so by limiting the consumption of potassium-rich foods, and cutting and soaking your vegetables in water before cooking them. Potassium supplemets are only available under medical advice.

Zinc
Zinc is a mineral needed to keep your immune system healthy, maintain normal thyroid function, and facilities wound healing and blood clotting. Foods such as seafood, dairy products, nuts, legumes, and whole grains are good sources of zinc. A balanced meal comprising moderate amounts of these foods can keep zinc levels well in check. Consuming too much zinc may result in fever, coughing, stomach pain, fatigue, among other problems. It is not recommended for anyone to take zinc supplements without the advice of a healthcare professional.

Hepatitis B vaccine in Singapore

Hepatitis B is serious and the most common infection of the liver that is caused by Hepatitis B virus. It is spread by direct contact with the blood or body fluids of an infected person. In Singapore, Hepatitis B is endemic, however, the rate of chronic infection is relatively low compared to other parts of Southeast Asia. Around 1 in 35 adult Singaporeans are Hepatitis B carriers. Hepatitis B infection can be prevented by vaccination.

Acute infection with Hepatitis B virus may occur without any signs and symptoms. Those who get Hepatitis B virus early in life (newborn or infancy) are less likely to clear the infection than those who become infected as adults. It is important that chronic Hepatitis B carriers should avoid consuming alcohol as it increases their risk for cirrhosis and liver cancer.

How Much
Based on our inquiry to 1 of clinic, the cost of Hepatitis B vaccine is around $30. This amount can be withdrawn from Medisave. Please find following table of withdrawal limit using Medisave:

All about Hepatitis virus

Do you know the difference between Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B?
Hepatitis refers to an inflammation of infection of the liver. One of the most common causes of the disease is when the liver is infected by either the Hepatitis A or Hepatitis B viruses. There are also three other less common strains of Hepatitis - C, D, and E.

Hepatitis A
The hepatitis A virus is often spread by infected stools. This means personal hygiene - especially after visiting the bathroom - is very important in reducing the prevalence of the virus. In some cases, eating raw oysters, under-cooked shellfish, or drinking untreated tap water can also increase the risk of infection. Usually, hepatitis A infection will go away on its own and does not cause any long-term health problems.

Symptoms of hepatitis A infection include fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, sudden unintended weight loss, stomach pain on the right side under the rib cage, fever, sore muscles and in some cases, jaundice, dark-colored urine or clay-colored stools.

Hepatitis B
There are two types of hepatitis B infection. Some people get acute cases whereby they become sick for a short time and then get better. About 90 percent of Hepatitis B infection are acute in nature. The condition may last for a few weeks or months but once the patient has recovered, there will not be any lasting health problems. About 10 percent suffer from long-term (chronic) hepatitis B. This is relatively more severe condition because long-term infection can cause serious liver damage and even cancer. babies and young children infected with the virus are more likely to develop chronic hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B can be transmitted through contact with the blood and bodily fluids of an infected person. Usually, methods of transmission include unprotected sex and the sharing of needles or other personal items (toothbrushes, razors) with an infected person. You cannot get Hepatitis B from casual contact such as hugging, kissing, sneezing, coughing, or sharing of food and/or drinks with an infected person.

There are no clear symptoms of Hepatitis B infection but some signs include exhaustion, fever, headache, appetite loss, nausea, rashes, jaundice, muscle aches and joint pain.

Protect yourself from Hepatitis
You may consult nearby GP or polyclinic if develop any of the above symptoms. Vaccine for prevention is advisable, you can get vaccinated at polyclinic to protect yourself against Hepatitis A and B.

PUB Aircon calculation

Have you wondering how much your electricity will cost you? is it very expensive to turn on the aircon every night? Do you know that current electricity tariff in Singapore is 27.28c/Kwh (Jul 2011)? what does this means?

ok...ok...i was the one who wondering as well, anyway i come out with simple calculation to know how much you should pay for each electricity equipment.
The simple calculation is: (Monthly bill = used Kwh x current tariff)

for example:
Let say your aircon has electricity consumption 800w and everyday you turned on the aircon for 10 hours. So with this situation your monthly bill for just an aircon is $65.47. How do i get this?
= 0.8kwh x 10hours x 30 days x 27.28c
= $65.47

is it expensive???
You are still able to save some $$$ by controlling the temperature and set it to 23C or 25C degree. How much lower it will be?

If you set the temperature setting is 23C degree, you may reduce about 5% of the compressor's working load. By doing this you should reduce 5% of your monthly bill
= $65.47 - 5%
= $62.19

If you set the temperature setting is 25C degree, you may reduce about 10% of the compressor's working load. By doing this you should reduce 10% of your monthly bill

= $65.47 - 10%
= $58.92

How about if you are using inverter technology and how does this inverter works?
Let's assume you are still using 800w aircon and set the temperature at 25C degree
1st hour of usage - 800w
2nd hour of usage - 650w
3rd hour of usage  - 525w
4th hour of usage - 450w
5th hour of usage - 420w
6th hour of usage - 405w
7th hour of usage - 400w
8th hour of usage - 400w
9th hour of usage - 400w
10th hour and rest of usage - 400w
The calculation for usage about 10 hours will be:

= 850 + 650 + 525 + 450 + 420 + 405 + 400 + 400 + 400+ 400
= 4900w/day
= 4.9kwh/day

The monthly bill for aircon inverter
= 4.9kwh x 30days x 27.28c
= $40.10

Have you now got an idea how your aircon's bill will be for this month onwards?
Please note that I am not expertise on PUB matters, electricity, or aircon. The calculation above just for illustration only

Travel Singapore to Bintan

I recently made another trip Riau Island, Bintan. This eventually my 3rd time been to Bintan for holiday and other purposes. If you ever seen my post previously about travel to Batam, the ferry terminal you should take to Bintan is Tanah Merah ferry terminal, not Harbourfront Terminal. There are not many things in this terminal as there are only about 2 eateries located at near entry gate and exit gate.

You may find many resorts in Bintan and there are resorts just few minutes away from the ferry terminal in Bintan (Bandar Bentan Telani Terminal). Apparently the resort I chosen is Bintan Agro Resort which take another 45 mins - 1 hour to reach there. The resort provided pick-up transportation from ferry terminal, so please check with the resort and make the arrangement.

Bintan resort ferry cost me $66 for return ticket. Yeah...it is more expensive than ferry to Batam since Bintan resort became tourist attraction for many people who stay in Singapore, either for family holiday or just play a golf there. You may not be surprised to see all the charges rate is based on Singapore dollar.

How to get to Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal
1. Go to Bedok Int / Tanah Merah MRT Stn
2. Take SBS bus no: 35
3. Alight at last point at Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal

How to get to Bintan Agro Resort
1. Get to Bandar Bentan Telani ferry terminal
2. Land transportation arranged with resort and it will take another 45 min -1 hour

Singapore to Batam - Batam Center

I had posted previously, travel from Singapore to Batam (Harbour Bay). And this time, I'm going to post another 'series' of travel to Batam which will arrive at Batam Center. Probably this the most frequent for people travel to/from Batam - Singapore.

There are 2 operators running the ferry to Batam Center: Batam Fast and Penguin. This time I took Batam Fast which cost me $40+$7 for return ticket. The reason I put $40 + $7 is because you will pay $40 in Singapore and $7 in Batam. You may also make advance booking for the ferry back from Batam - Singapore when you arrived at Batam Center, this is to ensure you will have a seat at timing you prefer for going back.

Once you arrived at Batam Center you may heading to Mega Mall Batam via connection bridge at level 2. If you decided to go straight to Hotel, there is a taxi waiting just outside the Batam Center. I strongly suggest for car rental for touring in Batam. The car rental with driver will be much cheaper compare to Taxi and easy to go anywhere at your own.

1 day trip itinerary
1. Balerang bridge - current popular attraction in Batam that connected about 6 islands. Along the journey you may find few beaches.
2. Old Vietnamese refugee camp or the biggest temple in South Asia "Vihara Duta Maitreya"
3. Kelong (fresh live) Seafood and dragon fruit farm near at Balareng bridge-3 *Please be aware of hygiene issue due to flies around when food served
4. Shopping at Malls (eq: Nagoya Hill)
5. Massage

Things to note:
1. Main Languange: Bahasa Indonesia. English is widely spoken for any tourist places or related such hotel, restaurant, or taxi driver.
2. Timing is GMT +7 (1 hour behind Singapore Time). 8pm in Singapore is 7pm in Batam
3. Public transport not well developed as Singapore, so convenient transport will be taxi or car rental
4. Curreny 1 SGD = around Rp 6800,00 (07/05/2011)

How to rent a car in Batam
1. Talk with Hotel staff to get a car rental
2. Anton: +62812-701-4074
3. http://batamrentcar.com/
and so on...you may google to find out more. Please note point no2 i got it from other blog who used them and no3 from Google. I'll suggest to ask price for no2 and no3 to compare with no1. Most of the cases rental from hotel is higher than outside.

Hepatitis A vaccine in Singapore

Havrix 1440 Hep-A
I was taken hepatitis A vaccine last year for 1st dose and recently for 2nd dose at Singapore Polyclinic. I find taking Hepatitis A vaccine at Polyclinic is cheaper than other places. The vaccine given was Havrix 1440 as shown on the left. Not sure if there are many types vaccines outside with different range of price. They charged me for $142 for 2 doses while other places charge a little bit more about $150-160. Please note when you decided to go polyclinic, you have to bear the waiting time that might be longer.

Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is an acute inflammation of the liver caused by infection with hepatitis A virus. Hepatitis A virus is often spread by infected stools. This means personal hygiene is very important in reducing the prevalence of the virus. In some cases, eating raw oysters, undercooked shellfish, or drinking untreated tap water can also increase the risk of infection.

Symptoms
Symptoms of hepatitis A infection include fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, sudden unintended weight loss, stomach pain on the right side under the rib cage, fever, sore muscles, and in some cases, jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes), dark-coloured urine or clay-coloured stools.

Most people recover in under 2 months, but in a few, the illness may persist up to  6 months. Some patients may experience a symptomatic relapse 2 - 3 months after the initial illness.

Treatment

Hepatitis A is a self-limiting disease. There is no specific treatment. Symptomatic treatment and rest are all that is required.

Hepatitis A vaccination could be useful also for:
  • Sewerage workers
  • Food service workers
  • Healthcare workers
  • Day-care attendees.
  • Hepatitis A & Travelers
Vaccines given in 2 doses, after the 1st dose given then followed by a booster 6 - 12 months later.
